Born in 1937 in Mashad (Iran) and grew up in Tehran,
Tabriz, Orumiyeh, Isfahan and Rasht. Finished the high
school in Tehran and entered at Tehran University in
1955 to study pharmacology. Graduating in 1961, he went
straight into the military service as a lieutenant.
It was his father who introduced the pleasures of
calligraphy and painting to him. He took courses at
different schools and studies during the same time that
he completed his formal education.
He started illustrating as early as 1949 and joined the
press as a political cartoonist when he was only 16. in
1956 he was prevented from entering the only Fine Arts
School in Iran, under the military service regulations.
Nevertheless, he kept himself busy at painting most of
the time.
During the 1970's he illustrated school books and
paperback books, before leaving for Belgium to study
animation on a grant of I.I.D.C.Y.A.
In 1974 he was the first to establish an animation
school in Iran, shortly after that he founded animation
courses at the former Farabi University (University of
Fine Arts) where he began to give lectures.
During 1970's he was busy making 10 animated films,
illustrating, and writing a dozen of storybooks. His
films were screened on an international scale and his
books were displayed on international fairs, winning a
dozen of awards.
He completed his last war fiction "Superpowers" in
war-torn Tehran under the Iraq missile attacks. In the
same year he was commissioned by a Finnish Company to
make "Sindbad Tale" but the film made him leave for
Finaland and later for Holleywood. He returned to Iran
in 1991.
Different animation bodies have his membership including
ASIFA board of directors, ASIFA (since 1971) and ASIFA
Iran among others. He is a founder and president of
ASIFA-Iran (since 1986). He has set up exhibitions
aboard Iran, California (USA, oil painting), DEANZA
College (USA), USC and UCLA (USA), among many others.
He is in the process of preparing an illustration
(titled "Mulla Naserddin", and outstanding satirical
figure of Iranian folktale), writing a few books and
making an animated film. |
